The social background, from the different classes to the way communities think was splendidly described and I quite enjoyed the atmosphere of the novel. Her father shunned her, sending the broken-hearted young dependent to live with a sister until she promised to reexamine her feelings. Maggie and her family are extremely well-drawn characters, as are her potential mates – a tribute to the power of the author.

Il mulino sulla Floss by George Eliot (3 star ratings)

If you love me, you are mine. I could not understand why Maggie loved her brother so much that she would willingly give up two men mullino of the fear of her brother’s disapproval. This is a very carefully constructed novel – a Bildungsroman set in the early 19th century. She became salaried and began writing essays and reviews for The Westminster Review.

Il mulino sulla Floss

She loves him more than everything in the world, but she is also afraid of him. I still loved with work though.

Maggie ruined all possibilities of a real happiness, a probable happiness, because of her incomprehensible love for her brother Tom. I’m not sure there’s going to be much of a plot, but I think Mullno still really going to like this.

Still glad I read it, though. I didn’t think much of Stephen, dloss. Review below was my way of deciding whether to round up or down and it was this or housecleaning. It’s just that it wasn’t my cup of tea. What an awful man. This book is considered one of George Eliot’s best book. And remember that I am unchangeably yours — yours not with selfish wishes, but with a devotion that excludes such wishes. I had a love and hate relationship with Maggie. A beautiful classic, a harsh study of the condition of women in the 19th century.

This is a reread for me and perhaps I perceived the story and characters better this time around.

Il Mulino Sulla Floss

The problem is, I still have Gaskell’s North and South at the shelf, waiting to be read, and I tremble to think I may not enjoy it and it will be another dull reading but I won’t worry myself with that right now! The key incident in the novel, divided into seven “books”, is a family disaster which effectively marks the end of childhood for Tom and Maggie at the start of book 3.

Books by George Eliot. So three stars, because it could have been so much better. The Mill on the Floss – NO spoilers. In my opinion, of course.

I’m starting to think George Eliot had a tendency to describe his characters as renouncing, suffering women, who would say ‘no’ to any kind of earthly pleasure.

I came so close to bestowing 4 stars on this book. She is the type of heroine who is too much for her time, she is considered too clever, too passionate, too impetuous and commits a grave crime in Victorian society: Want to Read saving…. As for the ending She dotes on her older brother Tom, who becomes the support for the family a few years into the story when the father loses his flosss because of a lawsuit.

And maybe there’s too much of that whole unfashionable character-as-a-force-in-destiny thing going on in her books.

She makes so many mistakes, that’s true, but many of them are due to men around her, as well as society in general. For a lover a classic literature, this is a good read. Why did it take 20hours of listening to reach THAT conclusion?! And the worst part was that he believed he was being good to her. Hands up everyone who thinks this means de Beauvoir was attracted to destructive relationships.
