To be fair, I suspect Huysmans was never interested in anything except ennui and this novel may well be a pointed stab at the aristocracy and flaneurs. He comments on religious music. In sum, this is an original and immersive portrait-in-text of a decadent aesthetic worldview and its limitations.
He then cancels his trip and returns home, convinced that only disillusion would await him if he were to follow through with his plans. Eventually, his late nights and idiosyncratic diet take their toll on his health, requiring him to return to Paris or to forfeit his life. In one of the book’s most surrealistic episodes, he has gemstones huysmmans in the shell of a tortoise. I read a passage where Huysmans describes the glorious un-naturalness of the guysmans combination of orange and blue.
