Typograohic also a handy index for extended characters for type designers, especially the Cyrillic italics which can be obtuse for those used to Latin regularity.
Among his more recent books of poetry is Ursa Majora multilingual work in which characters tell simultaneous stories in English, Latin, Greek, and Cree. No trivia or quizzes yet.
There’s not a thing about this book as a book I don’t love—the design incorporates so many little touches marginal notes, a lay-flat spine on a paperback, proper paragraph layout, dead-on perfect justification that it’s a joy just to look at it.
The Elements of Typographic Style: The only downside is that it’s sstyle bit dated in the face of new font technology. There’s a multiverse of stylistic guidelines within the pages of this beautifully typeset book. And it definitely convinced me that Robert Bringhurst is a stellar typographer. Books by passionate experts are fun.

Within that field, the Elements does a wonderful job of exploring the minutiae that most normal readers never notice, such as kerning adjusting the spacing between certain pairs of letters which, if spaced the same as other letters in the font, would read as either too tight or too wide — example: So much has been said about this excellent book, but I wanted to comment on the difference between the hardback and paperback versions.
Of course, the role of typography has vastly expanded over the past century, and the typographic rules for billboards are entirely different from those for websites. For instance, Bringhurst goes into exhausting detail about perfect proportion, thirds, sixths, and ninths, as well as harmonics, all of which may be Greek or choose other suitable language to many readers, while also offering diagrams and illustrations showing the “smoothness” or “disorder” of various layouts.
It almost doesn’t matter what this book was about, because it was so thoughtfully laid out and lovely to read, which is in itself a testament to great typography. I feel similarly about Tufte ‘s books, except there the classroom is a church, and the professor is a jerk.
Bringhurst’s little jokes and anecdotes are the cherry on top. I can’t take it anymore. The best book on typography and print design I’ve ever read! It is long-winded, goes off on tangents, and the author, while immensely knowledgeable, is set in opinions that will not be shared by everyone.
Deeper mastery will tell you when even Robert Bringhurst should be ignored.
