The storyline is a sequel to Ponniyin Selvan, a 20th-century Tamil historical novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, which narrates the story of one of the kings of the Chola Dynasty during the 10th and 11th centuries. In between the author narrates the societal pressure of arraying lakhs and lakhs of slaves to do the work inside the Capital, the stringent military system to keep the law and order, the food to feed them, the social uprising in-between the castes and the great changes in the system that this temple construction brings into the lives of Tanjore.

Books are not only written to educate, they are written for leisure and even for the metamorphosis of the soul.

This book brilliantly brings the pros and cons of the caste system, how and why it was formed and how well it can build a society if handled properly and how badly it can thrash down a society if mishandled.
